Dottyback- Orchid

The Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani), also known as Fridman's Dottyback or Purple Dottyback, is a small and colorful fish species popular among reef aquarium enthusiasts. Here are the general requirements for keeping an Orchid Dottyback:

1. Tank size: Orchid Dottybacks can be kept in smaller aquariums due to their small size. A tank with a capacity of at least 20 gallons (75 liters) is suitable for a single Orchid Dottyback. Providing more space is always beneficial, especially if you plan to keep them with other tankmates.

2. Tank setup: Provide a well-decorated tank with live rock and/or coral decorations. Orchid Dottybacks appreciate the presence of hiding places, caves, and crevices. They may also use the rockwork as a territory or vantage point. Ensure the tank has open areas for swimming as well.

3. Water parameters: Maintain stable and pristine water conditions. The recommended water temperature for Orchid Dottybacks is between 74°F and 78°F (23°C - 26°C). The pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.4, and the salinity level (specific gravity) should be within the range of 1.020 to 1.025. Regular monitoring of water parameters, efficient filtration, and regular water changes are important for their well-being.

4. Lighting: Orchid Dottybacks do not have specific lighting requirements. Providing moderate lighting that replicates their natural reef environment is generally suitable. However, if you have corals or other photosynthetic organisms in the tank, consider their lighting needs as well.

5. Feeding: Orchid Dottybacks are carnivorous and require a diet rich in meaty foods. Offer a varied diet that includes high-quality marine-based frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped fish, and other suitable meaty options. They may also accept some prepared carnivorous aquarium foods, such as pellets or flakes. Feed them small portions multiple times a day to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.

6. Tankmates: Orchid Dottybacks can be territorial, especially towards other fish of similar shape or color. It's best to keep them as the only Orchid Dottyback in the tank unless you have a large enough tank with ample hiding places and territories. They can generally coexist with other peaceful and non-aggressive tankmates, such as small reef-safe fish and invertebrates.

7. Acclimation: Proper acclimation is crucial when introducing an Orchid Dottyback to a new aquarium. Slowly drip acclimate the fish to the water parameters of your tank over a period of time to reduce stress and help them adjust to their new environment.

Orchid Dottybacks are generally hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for beginner and intermediate aquarists. However, it's important to provide suitable hiding places, maintain stable water conditions, and offer a balanced diet to ensure their long-term health and well-being.
