Description

  • Appearance: Greenish body with dark, oblique orange or bluish bars. Both sexes are drab as adults, but juveniles have 8–10 complete dark vertical bars.

  • Body shape: Elongated and strongly compressed.

  • Fins: Have thread-like pelvic fins with an elongated ray that can reach beyond the caudal fin.

  • Mouth: Small and slightly protrusible, with a papillose upper lip.

  • Size: Reaches a maximum length of about 12.5 cm (5 inches). 

Habitat and behavior

  • Habitat: Found in sluggish, vegetated waters in the Indian subcontinent.

  • Breathing: They are obligate air-breathers, using a labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air.

  • Behavior: Peaceful, slow-moving fish. They are often found in groups in the wild.
