Catfish - Marble Stargazer

Stargazer Catfish, also known as Asian Sun Catfish or Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, are large freshwater catfish native to South America. They have unique physical features and require specific care to thrive in an aquarium. Here are the general requirements for keeping Stargazer Catfish:

1. Aquarium Size: Stargazer Catfish can grow quite large and require a spacious tank to accommodate their size. A tank size of at least 100 gallons (378 liters) is recommended for a single adult Stargazer Catfish. Larger tanks are even better, especially if you plan to keep multiple individuals or include tank mates.

2. Water Parameters: Stargazer Catfish prefer warm water conditions that mimic their natural habitat. Maintain a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C). The pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral, typically between 6.0 and 7.5. Water hardness can vary, but a range of 5-15 dGH is generally suitable. Regularly monitor and maintain appropriate ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.

3. Filtration: Stargazer Catfish are messy eaters and produce a substantial amount of waste. Therefore, a powerful filtration system is essential for maintaining excellent water quality. Use a quality canister filter or a combination of mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration. The filter should provide adequate water circulation and oxygenation. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the filter media are necessary.

4. Lighting: Stargazer Catfish do not have specific lighting requirements. A standard aquarium light that provides a natural day-night cycle is sufficient.

5. Decorations: Provide a well-decorated aquarium with hiding places and structures for Stargazer Catfish. Utilize rocks, caves, driftwood, and PVC pipes to create hiding spots and territories. Ensure that the decor is stable and doesn't have sharp edges that could harm the fish.

6. Tank Mates: Stargazer Catfish are predatory and can be aggressive towards smaller tank mates. It's best to keep them in a species-specific tank or with larger, non-aggressive fish that are too big to be seen as prey. Avoid keeping them with fin-nipping or aggressive species that could harm or stress the Stargazer Catfish.

7. Feeding: Stargazer Catfish are carnivorous and primarily eat meaty foods. Offer them a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods. They enjoy a mix of protein-rich foods such as shrimp, prawns, fish fillets, and small invertebrates. Ensure they are receiving a balanced diet and avoid overfeeding.
