Barb- Odessa
The Odessa barb (Pethia\ padamya) is a vibrant freshwater fish known for its striking red and black coloration, especially in males. Males develop a bright red horizontal stripe across a black or silver body, while females have a silver or pink body with a black spot near the pectoral fin. These active and hardy fish are omnivores that grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) and are ideal for community tanks with plenty of open swimming space.
Physical description
Coloration: Striking, shimmering body that is ideal for aquascaped tanks with green plants and dark substrates.
Males: Black to silver body with a bright red horizontal stripe running from the head to the tail.
Females: Silver or pink body with a distinct black spot above the pectoral fin.
Size: Typically reach 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) but can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm).
Behavior: Active, energetic, and shoaling fish that enjoy exploring all levels of the tank.
Habitat and care
Origin: Native to Myanmar.
Tank: A well-planted tank of at least 30 gallons with soft, slightly acidic water is recommended.
Environment: Provide both dense planting for security and open swimming areas.
Diet: Omnivores that will readily accept flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods, including brine shrimp and daphnia.
Tank mates: Peaceful and suitable for community tanks, but may eat smaller invertebrates like shrimp.
Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care.
